In the United States of America the popular game bingo was first called ‘beano’. Back then, the game was practically only played on small fairs and during carnivals. In the version played back then, the dealer chose small pieces of papers with a number on them out of a box or hat. After he picked a piece of paper, the players had to place a bean on top of the chosen number on their card, when they had the matching number. When a player had the winning card, he would yell ‘beano’. After the game, the cards with numbers could be reused again and again.
The complete history of bingo can be dated back to the year 1530, where a game called ‘Lo Giuco del Lotto D’Italia’ was played in Italy. This is a form of the lottery. Lo Giuco del Lotto D’Italia is still being played every Saturday evening in Italy. The game integrated in France during the year 1778. The French called the game simply ‘Le Lotto’ then. Another form of Lo Giuco del Lotto D’Italia was played in Germany during the 1800s. The only difference between the German game, and the general game, is that the game was used at school to teach the children in Germany.
The game became known in America under the name ‘beano’ in 1929. In America it was first played the town Atlanta on a local fair. The salesman in toys, Edwin S. Lowe, was the person who changed the name into bingo. He heard a player shout ‘bingo’ instead of ‘beano’. Together with Carl Leffler, who was a mathematics professor at the university, Edwin thought of many different ways to increase the number of combinations that can be made with the cards. In the year 1930 Leffler had made about 6000 different bingo cards.
A priest of the catholic church in Pennsylvania went to ask the toy salesman Lowe whether the game can be used to play with a lot of people to raise money for the church. After that, bingo started to gain popularity incredibly when people started playing bingo in church. Around the year 1934 an estimated 10.000 bingo games were played throughout the entire United States of America. Nowadays, more than 90 million dollars is spent by people playing bingo every week in North America.
